Twelve Major Expeditions: an outstanding record of continuity and partnership with the Malawian Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

Accumulated data has demonstrated trends in the status and conservation needs of the large mammals, as well as investigations into plant and invertebrate diversity and river ecology. These projects are designed in co-operation with the staff and are directly useful to the management of the Nyika National Park .

A diverse mosaic of habitats, a wilderness uninhabited by humans, gives this area rich diversity. In conjunction with the major institutions, we have published the first definitive plant and invertebrate checklists, including thousands of species, each individually referenced. By demonstrating the diversity of the area and its significance to conservation, the status of the Nyika National Park is raised, followed by further international support. Malawian scientists have been able to visit other countries for the first time, to work on plant specimens at Kew and to present the exciting discoveries of the project at the International Conference of Mammals.

On returning from the wilderness, expeditioners have said the unique experience has been of lasting value. They have particularly enjoyed the cultural exchanges with the Malawians and above all the privilege of being allowed to live and work alongside them in an area which is normally not accessible to outsiders.
